Feeding and Routine During Stressful PeriodsUpdated 7 hours ago

Cats like life to feel familiar. During fireworks season, keeping everyday routines steady can help them feel more comfortable, even when things outside get noisy.

Keep their usual routine

Stick to familiar feeding and play times where possible, and offer their usual food. A noisy evening is a good time for familiar favourites, rather than a change of menu.

Let your cat choose whether to join in with play or settle somewhere quiet.

Make mealtimes comfortable

Offer food in a quiet, easily accessible spot where your cat can eat undisturbed. Small, fresh portions may be more appealing than a large meal.

If they don’t eat straight away, offer a fresh portion later. Follow the food’s storage guidance and avoid leaving wet food out all evening. Keep track of how much they’re eating.

Keep fresh water within reach

Make sure your cat always has fresh water in a quiet spot, separate from their food and litter tray.

Make their litter tray easy to reach

Keep their usual tray clean and accessible. If they’re spending time in another part of the house, consider adding an extra tray in a quiet spot away from food and water.

When to contact your vet

Stress can affect appetite, but don’t assume it’s the cause. If your cat stops eating, eats noticeably less or changes their drinking or toilet habits, contact your vet promptly.
