How to Prepare Your Home for Fireworks SeasonUpdated 3 hours ago
A little preparation can make fireworks nights more comfortable for your cat. Here’s how to set them up for a cosy evening indoors.
Create safe hiding spots
Give your cat a choice of comfortable places to retreat to. Some prefer a tucked-away corner; others like a secure perch up high.
Here are a few of our suggestions:
A cardboard box lined with a familiar blanket (an Untamed delivery box works nicely!)
A covered cat bed
A cosy spot under a bed
A stable, easily accessible resting spot on a cat tree
Set these up before fireworks begin, and let your cat choose where to settle, and try to use bedding that already smells of your cat, as familiar scents are really reassuring. If they hide, leave them undisturbed.
Keep them indoors
Bring your cat inside before dusk, or earlier if fireworks are expected. Close windows and doors, and secure cat flaps.
Make sure they can reach food, water and a clean litter tray. Keep their usual safe indoor spaces accessible so they can choose where they feel comfortable.
Soften the noise and flashes
Draw curtains or blinds to screen out flashes. Familiar background sound, such as the TV, radio or gentle music, may help soften sudden bangs.
Keep the volume comfortable and avoid programmes with loud, unexpected sounds. Carry on calmly, and offer company if your cat seeks it.
Check their microchip details
Before the fireworks season starts, check that the contact details registered to your cat’s microchip are up to date. If they slip out and go missing, this helps you be contacted when they’re found.
