How to Transition Your Cat from Dry Food to UntamedUpdated 13 days ago
Helping your kibble-loving cat switch to wet food? Here’s how to do it with less stress and more success.
Moving from dry to wet food can be a big change for your cat - especially if they’ve never known anything else. But wet food is closer to what cats are designed to eat, offering better hydration and more suitable nutrition. With some simple techniques (and a little patience), your cat can make the switch.
How to guide your cat from dry to wet:
Start by understanding the challenge
Cats get used to what they grow up with. Dry food also contains coatings that make it extra tempting, so don’t be surprised if they hesitate at first.
Go slow
Offer a spoonful of wet food near their usual dry food
Let them get used to the smell before mixing it in
Gradually add wet food into their dry, or mix dry into the wet’s gravy
Trick their tastebuds
Place a few kibbles on top of the wet food
Try adding their favourite treat (like tuna or chicken) into the mix
Explore other wet brands if they refuse at first — consistency matters more than quality in the early stages
Make mealtimes work for you
Switch to two structured meals a day (no free-feeding)
Hunger can motivate them to explore new textures and flavours
Never let your cat go without food for more than 24 hours
Be patient
This process can take weeks - sometimes even longer. Don’t force it, as stress can cause food aversion. Keep encouraging gently, and celebrate small wins along the way.
