Understanding Protein Needs in Senior Cats

It's common to hear differing advice about protein for senior cats. Here's our perspective:

  • Always Defer to Your Vet: First and foremost, we always defer to the advice and judgment of your veterinarian. They know your cat's specific health conditions and what is best for their individual needs.

  • Our General View on Protein: Our food has a high protein content (approximately 16%), which aligns with the protein levels cats would naturally consume in their wild diet.

  • The Latest Research: Contrary to some conventional wisdom, emerging scientific research indicates that ageing and senior cats may actually need more high-quality, highly digestible protein (from meat, not vegetable sources) and calories as they grow older, rather than less. This helps to offset lean body mass loss (sarcopenia), supporting their vitality and overall health.

For senior cats where a vet has advised a lighter protein load, we offer an excellent alternative: Pâté Recipes.

Our new Smooth Pâté recipes are a fantastic option, featuring 11% protein and 43% meat. They are a complete and balanced meal, but with a lighter overall protein percentage compared to our shredded gravy recipes, making them a gentler choice for certain conditions while still being highly digestible.

You can explore all the details of our Pâté recipes in the dedicated Help Centre section here.
